Behind you their impressive ‘house mountain’ the Pfänder (1,064 m) stretches out to the Alps. Look to the right and you see Germany, over to your left: Switzerland. The lake here is a combination of cultures, a celebration of life, the mountains and the water. There is so much to see and do that it’s hard to decide where to start. So we decided to go for it all in a day – barely scratching the surface of the region around Lochau by rail, air, foot and boat.
We started with a nice cup of coffee. An espresso on the waters of the lake in the architectural gem of a bath house at the SENTIDO Seehotel Am Kaiserstrand. Thus refreshed we took a leisurely 5-minute walk to the train station to catch the local train to Bregenz – just one station away.
If it’s culture you’re after, you’ll find it a few steps from the Bregenz train station. Stroll along the promenade and check out the avant-garde art architecture by the new harbour or catch an opera under the stars at the Bregenzer Festspiele – made even more famous by the James Bond film ‘Quantum of Solace’.
Art lovers should visit the architecturally outstanding Kunsthaus Bregenz. With these views, you get to thinking about mountains a lot – so if you want to climb one but are a bit pressed for time (or fitness), then just do it the easy way: walk ten minutes from Bregenz harbour and catch the Pfänderbahn cable car for a breath- taking bird’s eye view of the entire lake and the surrounding valleys. Once you’re up here you can choose from an excellent network of hiking trails for every level of fitness.
