Worthwhile destinations while on holiday at Lake Constance:
Lying on the Austrian shoreline of Lake Constance, the very pretty city of Bregenz offers visitors plenty of culture. The city is best known for the annual summertime Bregenz Festival. Many guests and artists from around the world gather for this magnificent spectacle. A floating stage is anchored on the shore of Lake Constance. Its gigantic scenery and technical expertise make the festival into an unforgettable experience. Visitors enjoy an absolutely unique acoustic experience against a breathtaking background. Some 80 different performances of operas, operettas and concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra fill the programme. Well over 210,000 visitors attend the performances every year. In July and August there are 50-minute guided tours through the interior of the theatre where visitors can see how everything works and learn about the festival’s history.
The town of Lindau lies at the eastern end of Lake Constance in Germany and is one of the prettiest towns on the lakeside with its wonderful historic centre. Until 1806 Lindau was a self-governing imperial city and the old town lies on the island of the same name. The town can be reached via a railway dam, a bridge for pedestrians and cars and boats of the Lake Constance fleet. Lindau offers countless sights and only a few can be mentioned here. The Old Town Hall, with its unmistakeable clock on the northern façade, was constructed in 1422 in Gothic style and rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1576. A covered wooden stairway leads from Bismarckplatz to an outlook. In the 19th century the southern exterior façade was decorated with artistic pictures that present the history of the town in an attractive manner.
The island of Mainau is an absolute must for all flower-lovers. It is owned by the Bernadotte aristocratic family which descends directly from the line of the Russian Tsars and the Swedish royal family. The residence of the Order of Teutonic Knights forms a magnificent setting for many different events. The former audience room is covered in gold and is the centrepiece of the castle. It is open to the public for concerts and various events. The armoury, with various temporary exhibitions, can also be visited. The castle’s café serves delicious cakes and tasty snacks that are well worth trying.
‘Houses on Stilts’ at Unteruhldingen
Directly opposite the island of Mainau lies the largest open-air museum in southern Germany, the so-called ‘Houses on Stilts’ of Unteruhldingen. These reconstructions of 15 Stone Age and Bronze Age dwellings built on stilts are living history. With various figures models and tools, they display how people lived here in those times. There is also a 20,000 litre capacity diving aquarium as well as an exhibition of original items discovered here on the site.
The Swiss city of St. Gallen is one of the most attractive places on Lake Constance thanks to its historic Old Town. Nestling in hillsides of up to 900 metres, the city lies idyllically between the Alps and Lake Constance. The historic centre in the pedestrian zone with its residential buildings and wooded hillsides in the background forms a wonderful sight. St. Gallen is especially known for its world-famous cathedral which was declared UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1983. The Roman Catholic Collegiate Church from 1755 was formerly a bishopric and today counts as one of the final buildings from the Late Baroque period. Its interior is a combination of rococo and classicism while valuable works of the painter Joseph Wannenmachers decorate the walls.
There are many other interesting destinations further along Lake Constance between Kreuzlingen and Schaffhausen. For example, Stein am Rhein, with its historic Old Town and countless colourfully decorated houses, attracts many visitors. Close to the Rhine waterfalls is one of the most spectacular adventure parks in Europe. One highlight is a 450 m long cable car stretch with superb views of the waterfalls.
Popular leisure activities at Lake Constance
There are many very well-maintained cycling paths in the whole Lake Constance region. The Lake Constance Long-Distance Cycling Trail stretches over a distance of 300 km through Germany, Austria and Switzerland around the shores of the lake. It is recommended to take the right-hand side around the upper end of the lake as this stretch lies closer to the water.
For golfers there are 27 very attractive courses situated around Lake Constance. Most of the courses lie close to the lake in the heart of the beautiful countryside and are dominated by the panoramic Alpine mountain range.
Thanks to its diverse underwater world Lake Constance is also a popular diving site. Alongside adventurous cliffs there are comfortable sandy areas full of fish, so that there are suitable sites both for experienced divers and beginners. You can even dive down to a wreck in Lake Constance. The remains of a sunken wooden steamboat lie at a depth of about 40 m and can be visited accompanied by an experienced diving instructor.
Guests do not even need to miss out on proper winter sports at Lake Constance. There is a small but high quality skiing area on the Pfänder, the mountain overlooking Bregenz. The slopes are not particularly difficult and are thus suitable for families with children. Whoever is looking for more challenging descents will find a large skiing area with 93 ski lifts in the nearby Bregenzer Wald. The pistes of the Allgäu in Germany can also be reached in a relatively short time.
Gastronomy at Lake Constance
A holiday at Lake Constance also has plenty to offer gourmets. The lake is an important fishing area for whitefish, a trout-like fish. Sand or blue whitefish are offered smoked, grilled or steamed in many restaurants. The other main fish caught in the Lake Constance area include perch, burbot, bullheads, lake trout and eels.
On the German side of Lake Constance the typical regional cuisine of Baden is mostly to be found. These hearty meals are among the best in Germany as witnessed by the fact that Baden has more star restaurants than any other German region.

2 nights half board in a pristine lake-view room. The staff incredibly friendly, headed by a very professional maître 'd with high standards adopted by junior staff. We wish to particularly mention Melana Boch who served really marvellous food with a wonderful smile. We want nothing more.
The Bathing House was a fabulous attraction and a dip in the lake certainly enlivened the senses. Highly recommended.
